Hi gang!

I'm using a Maxtor One Touch II 300 gig external drive and the Retrospect
Express software by Dantz that came with it.

I have no problem running the backup, however I am unable to restore any
files.

I accidentally erased some mp3 audio files from my hard drive, so I went to
restore them since they had been backed up. I launch the Retrospect Express
software and select the "Restore" button. The dates of restores appear. I
select the date and drive and hit the "next" button. I get the "scanning
the drive" message and then........nothing. I never get the list of files
to restore. The software seems to be hanging at this point.

Any suggestions? It's frustrating to be saving data that I can't restore.

Thanks in advance!

Lou

PS I posted this problem on the Dantz forum. Over 40 people read the
message but I didn't get any replies.

This won't be much help now, but after innumerable problems with RE HD
I gave up and have uninstalled it. I have experimented with lots of
backup progs but now use a combination of Ghost 2003 and Nero BackItUp
instead. Even if RE works, you cant fully restore a failed system
from the OneTouch without first re-installing windows and then RE on
the system HDD, which is a waste of valuable time. So I use Ghost
monthly to image the system HDD and I can fully restore from that and
I use Nero for data to fill in between the Ghost images. I can boot
Ghost from a DOS floppy to access the OneTouch if XP isn't working.

I've also reformatted my OneTouchII 300G to NTFS for reliability.
I was using the firewire connection but it failed and I had to revert
to USB2, which seems a bit slower. Not worth getting it repaired -
might lose all my data backups if I send it away! And it's an awful
lot of DVDs to make if I have to do it eventually!

There are lots of other data backup progs available, including the
free ntbackup in WinXP, but I'm a bit suspicious of Ghost 9 or 10.
Acronis True Image is highly recommended, and the older version I
trialled wasn't bad, although there are reports that the latest
version is a bit buggy.

Keep smiling!

I have an older One Touch, but I never installed the RE version that came
with the drive, instead I've been using the full retail Retrospect (version
6.5). No problems yet.

I did not even install the software to enable use of the One Touch button.
It's just as easy to define a Run script in Retrospect and avoid issues with
the drivers for the One Touch button, not to mention, but I will anyway,
using Run scripts is much more flexible than getting locked into a single
script via the button.

This week I installed Ghost 10 and am giving it a try.

I was thinking of upgrading to the full retail version of RE but wanted some
reasonable reassurance that i was experiencing a software error before
spending the $$.

Thanks for your insight.

There is no retail version of RE, instead, you get the full Retrospect
product.
See www.dantz.com for the available products.

from the Dantz website and am about to install it.

Wish me luck.......

Well I downloaded and installed the Retrospect 7.0 software. Unfortunately
it wasn't able to retrieve any files saved using Retrospect Express so I
formatted the Maxtor drive and did a back up of both my hard drives.

The restore function seems to work with one problem. I backed up two hard
drive - C and D. When I do the restore I tell the software to restore the
files to their original locations. However, when I try to restore files to
the D drive it puts them on the C drive instead. The only way I can get it
to restore to the D drive is to manually select the drive and directory's.
The "restore to original location" command is ignoring the D drive for some
reason. I haven't found anything in the manual addressing this problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Greetings,

If you really wish to restore data then I suppose Active@ undelete or
Uneraser (DOS) data recovery tools should help. They never failed me
before, neither they corrupted restored info. That will be definately
of a good usage for you.
