Discussion:
Boot from floppy or CD to restore?

Are there any backup apps which allow booting from a floppy or CD to
restore? The thing I don't like about the backup software that I've
seen is that you need Windows to run the software, so if you need to
restore, you need to install Windows and the backup software first,
before you can restore from your backup.

I have a Onstream 50 gig tape drive, but as I said, I need to get
Windows up and running after a crash, before I can restore from the
Onstream drive.

TIA

Are you refering to restoring the machine connected to the drive from a
tape? or restoring over the network from a backup server?

If it's the latter then Arkeia and Time Navigator (I think) will do it,
Arkeia currently only support Linux DR recovery, but I believe Time
Navigator supports both.

I would guess Arkeia is working on the windows version.

Arkeia can rebuild it's server from tapes but only once the Linux OS has
been installed first, I think Tina has some similar functionality but not
sure.

good luck in your quest.

Dantz Retrospect is the product to get if you want to boot from CD to
restore without first re-installing OS.

Wow! Thanks for all the feedback! DriveImage does backups? I didn't
realize that. Would it work with my Onstream tape drive?
I tried "Backup MyPC" because it supposedly alows you to boot from a
floppy or CD and restore, but it claims my version of XP service pack
doesn't support Disaster Recovery, so it won't allow me to restore
from backups made with it, without first installing Windows, and the
dirvers for my tape drive, and then the backup software itself, before
restoring. At that point I may as well proceed with a "fresh" windows
installation.......

You can use a data recovery service such as www.ontrack.com.
But it may be less expensive to replace the drive.
